Petter Naess is “Earthbound.”
The Norwegian helmer has attached to helm the cancer dramedy at 20th Century Fox for producer John A. Davis’ Davis Entertainment banner.
Naess is best known for his film “Elling,” which was nominated for the 2002 foreign-language film Oscar and also broke Norwegian box office records.
(Jay Roach’s Fox-based Everyman shingle has been working toward an English-lingo remake of “Elling,” also for the studio.)
“Earthbound” script by Gren Wells follows a doomed but often amusing and poignant relationship between a beautiful 30-year-old cancer patient and the attending oncologist, with whom she falls in love.
Davis Entertainment acquired Wells’ spec last October in a mid-six-figure discretionary buy. Davis shingle is also producing Fox’s live-action/CGI comedy “Garfield,” its adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s “I, Robot” and the Fox-New Regency comedy “First Daughter.”
Wells is a former mergers and acquisitions exec from Gotham who moved to L.A. to become a standup comic in 1998 but eventually turned to screenwriting. Her spec was brought into the Davis shingle by VP Lil Phillips, who is overseeing its development with 20th Century Fox senior VP of production Debbie Liebling.
Naess was repped by the Gersh Agency.
