Bancroft speaks up for ‘Spanglish’

Thesp to co-star alongside Sandler, Leoni in Col pic

Anne Bancroft has signed on to star in “Spanglish” for Columbia Pictures and helmer-producer James L. Brooks.

Pic will see Bancroft co-star alongside Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni. Shooting is expected to start at year’s end.

Brooks-penned romantic comedy concerns a married couple. Bancroft will play Leoni’s mother in the pic. Julie Ansell produces with Brooks.

Bancroft, repped by ICM, most recently received an Emmy nomination for her supporting role in “The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone.”

She and husband Mel Brooks are producing Ann Randolph’s play “Squeeze Box” for an Off Broadway bow next year and have also optioned the feature film rights.

Bancroft, a five-time Oscar nominee and a winner for her performance in “The Graduate,” won the Oscar in 1962 for “The Miracle Worker.”
