'Smith' & 'Jacket' seek replacements for Pitt, Wahlberg

While summer is typically slow for dealmaking, it’s proved perky when it comes to deal-breaking.

Brad Pitt has fallen out of New Regency’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” leaving the Fox-New Regency pic with a Sept. 1 start date and without its titular stars. There’s now an offer out to Will Smith.

Meanwhile, an offer is also out to Adrien Brody for Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The Jacket” after Mark Wahlberg vacated that role.

Pitt’s exit came on the heels of would-be co-star Nicole Kidman, who left the pic two weeks ago. When a swift deal couldn’t be made with another femme star, Pitt dropped out of the spy-vs.-spy romantic comedy. Doug Liman remains attached as director.

While no female co-star was ever in place on “The Jacket,” John Maybury remains set to direct for Warners and Section Eight. That pic is the story of a soldier who has been convicted of a murder and believes he’s traveling through time.

If Brody accepts the “Jacket” offer, it would be his first leading role since his Oscar-winning turn in “The Pianist.” He is also set to join the ensemble cast of “The Woods” for M. Night Shyamalan and Disney.
