‘Johnny’ on the spot to boost o’seas B.O.

Laffer racked up an estimated $20 million

Johnny English,” a spy spoof starring Rowan Atkinson, was just the tonic for ailing overseas markets over the weekend.

In its world preems, the Universal/UIP laffer racked up an estimated $20 million from 2,700 playdates in 21 territories.

Cashing in on the Easter school vacation that has just begun in Europe and Australia, the James Bond takeoff opened bigger than Atkinson’s “Mr. Bean” in the U.K., Spain, Belgium and Israel.

“We are delighted with these fantastic results, which show what a major international star Rowan Atkinson is,” UIP prez Andrew Cripps said.

Pic helmed by Peter Howitt picked up an estimated $5.5 million from 440 locations in Blighty (commanding 44% of the market, 50% bigger than “Bean”); $4.8 million on 778 prints in Germany (repping 37% of the weekend B.O.); $1.3 million on 330 in Italy; $1.5 million on 296 in Spain (75% up on “Bean”); and $1.4 million on 212 in Oz, on par with “Ice Age’s” entry last Easter — No. 1 in all.

The Working Title production was jaunty in Belgium ($775,000 on 51), Switzerland ($750,000 on 58), Holland ($680,000 on 111), Austria ($660,000 on 86) and Norway ($516,000 on 30). Ditto in Poland ($394,000 on 40), Denmark ($362,000 on 30), Sweden ($330,000 on 60), Portugal ($275,000 on 40), Israel ($250,000 on 33) and Finland ($247,000 on 20).

However, the Atkinson starrer’s $156,000 bow on 45 in New Zealand was shaded by “Maid in Manhattan,” which served up an estimated $185,000 on 56. The J. Lo headliner brought in roughly $3 million over the weekend, upping cume to $50 million, with Japan and Spain ahead.

“The Jungle Book 2” drew plenty of tykes, grossing an estimated $1.5 million on 464 in the U.K, $752,000 on 208 in Spain and $420,000 on 309 in Mexico, all figures Friday-Saturday.

Toon took an OK $240,000 Thursday-Sunday on 227 in Australia; estimated cume swung past domestic’s to $50 million.

In Brazil, helmer Hector Babenco’s prison drama “Carandiru” captured approximately $950,000 on 222, a record for a local pic, triple last year’s debut of “City of God” and level with “The Mummy Returns.” Sony has worldwide rights via Sony Pictures Classics.

In Japan, “Daredevil” eased by 26% after a ho-hum opening, trapping $1.2 million, bringing the nine-day market total to a solid $4.1 million.
