Directors get ‘A’ in history for TV noms

Frankenheimer's 'War' makes cut

The Directors Guild of America has included the late John Frankenheimer among its nominees for directorial achievement in 2002 TV.

Nomination, for his work on HBO’s “Path to War,” is the DGA’s fourth TV mention for Frankenheimer, who died July 6. He was previously tapped for “Against the Wall” in 1994, “Andersonville” in 1996 and “George Wallace” in 1997.

The DGA, which will announce the winner March 1 at its 55th annual awards dinner at the Century Plaza Hotel, showed a fondness for historical fare. Among the nominees were Julie Dash for CBS’ “The Rosa Parks Story,” Howard Deutch for CBS’ “Gleason,” Richard Loncraine for HBO’s Winston Churchill pic “The Gathering Storm” and Mick Jackson for HBO’s “Live From Baghdad.”

Dash, Deutch and Loncraine are first-time nominees, while Jackson is a two-time DGA winner in the category for “Indictment: The McMartin Trial” in 1995 and “Tuesdays With Morrie” in ’99.

HBO programs took three of the five noms; CBS garnered the other two.

The DGA has previously issued a posthumous nomination, tapping the late Frank Pacelli in 1998 for a nom in the daytime TV category for his work on “The Young and the Restless.” Scott McKenzie won the category for “General Hospital.”

Frankenheimer was nominated three times by the guild for features, 1966’s “Grand Prix,” and 1962’s “Birdman of Alcatraz” and “The Manchurian Candidate.”
