Warner Music rings up Nokia for downloads

Cellphone maker Nokia has dialed up a deal with Warner Music Intl. to let owners of its phones download music from top Warner artists such as Madonna.

Nokia’s new 3300 model, which goes on sale this month, will come with a memory card filled with clips of music from Warner artists and a CD-ROM of full-length tracks that can be downloaded onto the phone.

Deal gives Warners a new distribution outlet for its artists at a time when the record industry is sagging. The accord provides Nokia with a way to differentiate its products just as cellphone service has become a commodity facing stiff downward pressure on prices. Built-in cameras, inexpensive downloadable games and email services are among the add-ons included with sophisticated new phones.
