Games get new ratings

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board, the trade group that applies ratings to videogames, has added four new content descriptions for specific types of violence.

“Cartoon violence,” “fantasy violence,” “intense violence,” and “sexual violence” will now appear along with the age ratings on video and computer games. New labels add the total number of content descriptions provided by ESRB to 30.

Beginning Sept. 15, the self-regulatory group set up by the interactive game industry will also require games to carry age ratings and content descriptions on the back as well as the front of packaging, along with the minimum recommended age for “mature” and “adults only” products.
