Rob Williams has been appointed manager of acquisitions at arthouse distrib Wellspring, completing the buying team led by Marie Therese Guirgis, promoted last month to head of acquisitions.
A member until recently of DreamWorks’ theatrical marketing division in the New York office, Williams will work closely with Guirgis to acquire films and programming for Wellspring’s theatrical, homevideo and worldwide sales units.
Prior to DreamWorks, Williams worked as distribution and advertising coordinator with indie distrib Stratosphere Entertainment.
“Rob’s experience in both studio and arthouse distribution will serve us well,” said Guirgis. “His passion for world cinema and his marketing know-how are going to be tremendous assets to us going forward.”
In addition to its vast library of back titles by directors such as Fassbinder, Truffaut, Godard and Rohmer, Wellspring has become an acquisitive player with high-end festival fare, obtaining significant results with releases like Alexander Sokurov’s “Russian Ark,” which recently passed the $1 million mark in the U.S.
Upcoming releases for the New York and L.A.-based company include Brazilian Karim Ainouz’s “Madame Sata,” French newcomer Delphine Gleize’s “Carnages” and Iranian Bahman Ghobadi’s “Marooned in Iraq.”
