Crystal’s latest thesp to write books for kids

Comedian's granddaughter inspired scripting duties

Following the lead of Bill Cosby and Julie Andrews, comedian Billy Crystal is writing kids books.

Crystal has inked a six-figure two-book deal with HarperCollins Children’s Books, with the first book, “I Already Know I Love You,” due out in April. Elizabeth Sayles will illustrate.

HarperCollins is owned by News Corp.

Crystal’s first grandchild, Ella, inspired his storytelling. “My granddaughter’s birth has made me want to create things that she will love,” he said.

Crystal is one of many entertainers who have added children’s books to their resumes. In fall another HarperCollins author, Jamie Lee Curtis, will add “It’s Hard to Be Five” to her kids’ book collection. The prolific Bill Cosby most recently collaborated with his daughter on “Friends of a Feather,” published last fall by HarperEntertainment. Jerry Seinfeld’s “Halloween” came out around the same time from Little, Brown, a division of AOL Time Warner. John Lithgow has published kids books with Simon & Schuster. And this fall Julie Andrews’ children’s book imprint, the Julie Andrews Collection, bows at HarperCollins.

Crystal is repped by MBST Entertainment.
