Child star, porn star game for debate

Show to bow Oct. 1, will wrap on election day Oct. 7

A washed-up child actor and a porn star walk into an election.

Game Show Network plans to fill in the punchline Oct. 7, as the cabler has enlisted gubernatorial candidates Gary “Whatchoo Talkin’ ‘Bout” Coleman and Mary “Marry Carey” Cook for its electoral special “Who Wants to Be Governor of California? The Debating Game.”

Announcement was made during a Friday press conference at the Park Hyatt Los Angeles Hotel. Plans for the show surfaced last week (Daily Variety, Aug. 11).

Coleman and Cook will duke it out along with three other California gubernatorial candidates on the cabler this fall. The remaining players will be unveiled in the next two weeks.

Net also introduced former MTV VJ Kennedy as show host and political correspondent for “GSN News.”

“I have such great respect for the political process and, despite that, I still decided to show up today,” she said.

During the conference, both candidates were given 60 seconds to sell their campaigns to reporters.

“I have three reasons to stay in,” Coleman said. “To help drive people to the polls, to make people focus on the issues and to get rid of Gray Davis.”

His platform also includes “alleviating that damn traffic we have to drive through everyday.”

Should she win, Cook said she plans to make the political process clearer to citizens by wiring the governor’s mansion with live Webcams.

“We don’t tell the candidates what to say. They can say whatever they want,” GSN prexy Rich Cronin said. “We’re doing this for entertainment purposes only,” he added.

“Well, I don’t think we can be any more entertaining than the California gubernatorial recall election,” Kennedy quipped.

“Debating Game” is set to bow Oct. 1 and will wrap on election day Oct. 7.
