Vid imports banned

World Brief

Kiwi film and video distributors are celebrating tougher rules restricting the parallel import of DVDs or videos of movies until nine months after the titles’ release.

The legal amendment means that auds will no longer be able to buy pics that have yet to screen in local theaters.

With imports banned, it should be easier to identify pirated material, much of it coming from Malaysia, Taiwan and Fiji.

Associate commerce minister Judith Tizard said the next big test would be how the New Zealand courts treat upheld copyright breaches.
