Planting tent-pols

Variety Editorial

With the recall looming in California, suddenly many people are assuming that Arnold Schwarzenegger will terminate the Gray Davis era. It’s almost as though Arnold has become an instant part of the political establishment — Ronald Reagan redux — despite the fact that there are many pivotal issues on which Arnold is still an unknown.

But if Schwarzenegger is considered a virtual shoo-in, what about Rob Reiner? To many in the show business community, Reiner’s credentials are more estimable. And if politics and showbiz are destined to intersect, there’s no way to avoid the presence of Mr. Excitement himself, Jerry Springer.

Having been enshrined in an opera in London, Springer surprised everyone by filing papers for a run for an Ohio seat in the U.S. Senate. He says he’ll make things official by the end of the month.

No one knows where Springer stands on a lot of the issues either.

“There is a vast political and cultural separation between the elites and real people,” he writes. Some might say that Jerry’s show has done much to justify that separation.

But that’s showbiz, right?
