Frecuencia Latina Canal 2 hopes a blend of comedy and serious social issues will attract audiences to its latest telenovela.

“Que buena raza” (What a Nerve), which bowed Monday, puts a new twist on the Cinderella story that courses through most Latin soaps by featuring the son of a poor peasant family that has migrated to the capital, where he falls in love with a rich girl. The soap also throws in twists related to Peru’s political corruption.

Director Michel Gomez says the soap “is a comedy, but we have no problems addressing issues of racism and machismo.”

Thesp Milene Vasquez and newcomer Gerardo Zamora head the cast.
