Poitier aboard UPN pilot

Thesp joins O'Bryan on CBS Prods Project

Thesp Sydney Tamiia Poitier (“First Years”) has been tapped to play the title role in the UPN sitcom pilot “Abby Newton,” while Sean O’Bryan (“Big Fat Liar”) will star as her love interest.

Project, from CBS Prods., stars Poitier as a woman balancing her personal life with her professional work on a regional sports show.

Besides a starring role in last season’s NBC drama “First Years,” Poitier’s credits include a major role in the 1999 NBC miniseries “Noah’s Ark.” Her resume also includes the Clint Eastwood thriller “True Crime” and the Showtime movie “Free of Eden.”

O’Bryan was a regular on the TV series “Brother’s Keeper” and “Pig Sty,” and he has guested on a wide variety of programs such as “Grounded for Life,” “Roswell,” “King of Queens,” “Roseanne” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.” In addition to “Big Fat Liar,” feature experience includes “The Princess Diaries” and “Out to Sea,” as well as TV movies “The Twilight of the Golds” and “Mary & Tim.”

Scribes Nat Bernstein and Michael Katlin will write and exec produce “Abby Newton,” which is UPN’s first comedy pilot of the season.

Poitier is repped by manager Ted Schachter and ICM, while O’Bryan is repped by Paradigm.
