President Bush on Tuesday gave daytime TV’s Jerry Springer another back-handed rebuke, expanding on his theory that terrorists have gotten the wrong idea about Americans from watching too much of the popular talk show host.
“They didn’t think we were a nation that could conceivably sacrifice for something greater than our self, that we were soft, that we were so self-absorbed and so materialistic that we wouldn’t defend anything we believed in,” the prez told seven NCAA champion teams visiting the White House. “My, were they wrong. They just were reading the wrong magazine, or watching the wrong Springer show,” Bush concluded. Bush didn’t specify which magazine or magazines might be finding their way onto the reading lists of terrorists.
Bush first fingered Springer in January, suggesting that America’s enemies were watching too much daytime TV, specifically, Springer’s no-holds-barred show.
