HBO has snapped up the film rights to Laura Blumenfeld’s Middle East memoir “Revenge: A Story of Hope.”
A source close to the deal said a production team has already approached “Titus” and “Lion King” director Julie Taymor to helm.
Simon & Schuster book chronicles Blumenfeld’s journey into tragedy and vindication. A Washington Post reporter, Blumenfeld was a college student traveling in Jerusalem in 1986 when a Palestinian militant shot seven tourists. One of the victims was her father, who miraculously survived a bullet to the head.
On a quest for justice, Blumenfeld returned to the Holy Land 10 years later, befriended the families of the shooters and eventually gathered enough evidence to incriminate the assailants.
“Revenge,” which will have a print run of 75,000 copies, already has generated a lot of media interest, most notably from ABC’s “Primetime Thursday.” This week Diane Sawyer is in Jerusalem, interviewing an eight-months-pregnant Blumenfeld for an upcoming show. Memoir will reach the shelves April 4.
