‘Gladiators’ finds a new battlefield in Nigeria

Dispatch

JOHANNESBURG — “Gladiators” is set to do battle in Nigeria. A local version of the format unspooled on pay TV operator M-Net’s Africa Channel via its DSTV satellite network July 13.

Nigeria is the second African country, after South Africa, to produce its own series of the combat show, which will be broadcast to more than 200,000 subscriber households in 42 countries. All 13 episodes of MTN’s “Gladiators Nigeria,” sponsored by cellphone company MTN, were filmed in Lagos during April with Nigerian presenters, contenders and gladiators. Although the production team was South African, a program of skills enhancement and transfer to Nigerian television crews was part of the project.

Carl Fischer, CEO of Magicworks, M-Net’s production company, says: “We will consider doing a second series of ‘Gladiators in Nigeria’ and possibly other African countries, subject to a performance evaluation of this first series.”
