Fox wins with ‘Fame’ game

Modern-day 'Gong Show' tops 8 o'clock half-hour in key demo

HOLLYWOOD — It took only 30 minutes for Fox’s latest reality series, “30 Seconds to Fame,” to look like a hit, but the ratings news wasn’t quite as good for the net’s other Wednesday premiere, reality/comedy hybrid “Meet the Marks.”

Bow of “30 Seconds,” something of a modern-day “Gong Show,” topped its 8 o’clock half-hour in the key demo of adults 18-49 (3.8/14) and won with ease in the younger adults 18-34 (4.4/18), according to Nielsen. It also led in total viewers (8.07 million).

At 8:30, “Meet the Marks” won its slot in adults 18-34 (3.9/14) and was a strong second in 18-49 (3.2/11), but it lost 4 and 3 shares, respectively, from its strong lead-in and was fourth in overall audience (6.47m).

Elsewhere on the night, Fox’s “American Idol” (4.8/14 in 18-49) dominated its 9:30 half-hour in all key demos and also won in viewers (9.39m).

CBS’ “Big Brother 3” was first for all of the 9 o’clock hour in total viewers (8.93m) and second in most demos, including 18-49 (3.8/11).

And at 10, ABC’s unscripted legal series “State v.” delivered its best numbers to date (6.83m, 3.1/9 in A18-49), topping a repeat of NBC’s “Law & Order” in adults 18-34 (2.8/10 vs. 2.4/8) and placing a close second in most other key demos.

Compared with last summer in the 10 o’clock hour (drama “The Beast”), “State v.” has improved things for ABC by 50% in adults 18-49 (2.7/8 vs. 1.8/6) and by 64% in adults 18-34 (2.3/8 vs. 1.4/5).

Fox’s mostly original lineup took the night in adults 18-49 (3.7/12), while NBC led the way in total viewers.
