‘CSI: Miami’ wins season opener for CBS

Morning Ratings Flash - Rick Kissell

LOS ANGELES — “CSI: Miami,” spin-off of CBS smash hit “CSI,” is off to a flying start, dominating Monday’s 10 p.m. hour with an 8.5/21 in adults 18-49 and roughly 23 million viewers overall, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen.

The Eye net easily won the opening night of the 2002-03 season, taking every half-hour in adults 25-54 and total viewers and five of six in adults 18-49. Compared with its opening Monday a year ago, CBS was up roughly 30% in adults 18-49.

Two episodes of “Everybody Loves Raymond” also scored well for the net, averaging similar scores to “CSI: Miami” (prelim 23m, 8.1/18 in 18-49). “King of Queens” and “Yes, Dear” also scored victories for CBS.

ABC, with Monday Night Football, was second on the night, although reliable national estimates won’t be issued until this afternoon.

NBC ran third with a preliminary 4.6 rating in adults 18-49 (down about 15% from last year), led by a 90-minute edition of “Fear Factor” (prelim 5.0/13). A 90-minute premiere of “Crossing Jordan” started slowly at 9:30 but built to pretty solid numbers in the 10 p.m. hour (prelim 4.4/11 in 18-49), down 28% from its year-ago series premiere.

From 10-11 p.m., “CSI: Miami” trounced “Crossing Jordan” in the 18-49 and 25-54 demos, while “Jordan” held up better in adults 18-34 – losing by roughly 3 shares.

Fox, surprisingly, didn’t do much with its two-hour “American Idol” concert, averaging a prelim 3.3/8 in adults 18-49.
