Since there was no screening tied in with Thursday’s party for “The Kid Stays in the Picture” at Barney’s, it didn’t really matter that the guest of honor made a Liz Tayloresque, stylishly late entrance.
By the time Robert Evans arrived on the top-floor terrace, many, many champagne bottles had been popped and the crowd that included Sumner Redstone, Tom Freston, Jim Wiatt, Jennifer Tilly and Brooke Shields was primed to give the docu’s star a warm welcome.
As for the pic, Evans said he’d been told by Darryl Zanuck “decades ago” that if you can get an audience to laugh and cry in a two-hour period, you’ve got a hit. “I’ve seen the picture over 30 times,” Evans said. “I’ve heard the cries. I’ve heard the applause. I’ve heard the laughs. We’ve got emotion in it.”
Asked what he thought was the film’s best part, Evans replied: “The ending. I’m still alive.”
