This fall, soup’s on at Liza and David’s.
Liza Minnelli and David Gest met the press Thursday to officially announce their new VH1 reality skein, in which the duo will serve up cuisine and musical performances from their Manhattan penthouse (Daily Variety, July 3). Cabler launches its contribution to the home invasion reality genre in October.
While Liza’s the one known for her pipes, it was new hubby Gest who did most of the talking during the press conference at the House of Blues in L.A. “It’s an intimate evening at our house — kind of like our wedding,” he joked.
According to Gest, skein will feature Minnelli singing solo and joining equally famous entertainer friends in duets. Minnelli may even cook the dinners herself here and there — “if I have time,” she said. But just in case, the pair already have a bevy of chefs lined up for the gig.
While Minnelli and Gest were not prepared to officially announce guests, Gest did say the duo hope to entertain a wide variety of guests, from Usher and Dr. Dre to Al Green, George Jones and Barry White.
Responding to the inevitable questions about how their show compares to “The Osbournes,” Gest said he and his wife were big fans of Ozzy and Co. “They’re fantastic … (but the new show) is not ‘The Osbournes,’ ” he said. “Think of it more as a musical jam with dinner thrown in.”
