Fox and cablers top TCA Awards

'24,' 'Bernie' help net nab half of series p'gramming nods

Cable dominated the rest of the awards, with the other five commercial broadcast nets completely shut out of the competish.

In addition to program of the year, “24” was named outstanding new program. Fox cleaned up in comedy, with “The Bernie Mac Show” winning overall honors and star Bernie Mac awarded kudos for individual achievement in comedy.

Fox’s vet toon laffer “The Simpsons” took the TCA’s first Heritage Award, designed to honor programming that’s had a significant impact on society and pop culture.

“We were pretty overwhelmed,” Fox Entertainment prexy Gail Berman said of her net’s haul at the TCAs. “Having put (so much) effort into our programming, that it was so highly regarded by people was just wonderful. It was really a wonderful evening.”

Top drama series honors went to HBO’s “Six Feet Under,” which dominated Thursday’s Emmy noms. Michael Chiklis won for individual achievement in drama for FX’s “The Shield.”

In other cable wins, HBO’s “Band of Brothers” took home the nod for movies/minis/specials while Nickelodeon’s kidvid powerhouse “SpongeBob SquarePants” was tagged outstanding children’s show.

PBS doc series “Frontline” received news/info series honors, snagging its fifth TCA award since 1992.

Bill Cosby was feted for lifetime achievement.

Awards were held at the Ritz Carlton Huntington Hotel & Spa in Pasadena. The TCA comprises more than 200 journos from the U.S. and Canada.
