Acquisitive minds: Steven Raphael

Senior VP of acquisitions-co-productions, USA Films, U.S.

Recent buys:

Mira Nair’s “Monsoon Wedding”; “Far From Heaven,” from Todd Haynes; “8 Women,” from Francois Ozon

Rate the acquisitions climate:

“The climate is cautious. But there is always room for quality. The numbers are becoming increasingly important — but at the end of the day, you have to believe in what you’re buying — or else it is just a waste of everyone’s time. I want to buy films by directors who have potential to make future films. I’m not interested in just the one film. It’s too much work. You need to invest in the film and the filmmaker.”

Advice to filmmakers vying for your attention:

“Make the best film possible. Watch your ego. Avoid being the one-hit wonder.”

Favorite place to screen a film:

“In N.Y., the Screening Room with a co-worker whose advice I trust.”

Films you wish you had picked up:

” ‘You Can Count on Me,’ I think it’s a perfect film.”
