‘Millie’ tops Drama Desk

Musical takes 5 nods including actress, director

See winners“Thoroughly Modern Millie” was named best musical, while “The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?” and “Metamorphoses” shared the award for best play at the 47th Drama Desk Awards Sunday night.

“Millie” won the most trophies overall, with five. Its other nods were for actress Sutton Foster, featured actress Harriet Harris, director Michael Mayer and orchestrations.

But it lost the awards for music and lyrics to Jason Robert Brown’s Off Broadway tuner “The Last Five Years.” (Broadway and Off Broadway shows compete in the same categories for the Drama Desk honors.) The musical book award went to Elaine Stritch and John Lahr for Stritch’s solo show “Elaine Stritch at Liberty.” Stritch was also honored with a trophy for solo performance.

The revival nods went to the London-born “Private Lives” and “Into the Woods.” Alan Bates (“Fortune’s Fool”) and Lindsay Duncan (“Private Lives”) were named best actor and actress in a play, while John Lithgow took home the actor-musical trophy for his perf in “Sweet Smell of Success.”

An assortment of critics and writers on theater vote the winners. Rue McClanahan hosted the ceremony, and presenters were scheduled to include “Into the Woods’ ” Laura Benanti, Bill Pullman and Mercedes Ruehl of “The Goat,” Lithgow, Stritch and Vanessa Williams, among others.
