SOUTHBURY, Conn. — Brian Murray will play Pope Pius IX in the world preem production of Alfred Uhry’s “Edgardo Mine” at Hartford Stage.
The cast will include Randy Graff, Michael Countryman, Spencer Kayden, Robert LuPone, Jesse Schwartz, Johnny Giacalone and Brennan Brown. Doug Hughes directs.
The production runs Oct. 17-Nov. 17. The play is based on the real-life abduction of a 6-year-old Jewish boy, Edgardo Mortara, by the Catholic Church in 1858 after the child was secretly baptized by a family servant.
The ensuing international scandal and public outcry helped power anti-papist sentiment in Italy and abroad.
Schwartz will play the boy Edgardo, Graff and Countryman his parents. Kayden is set to play the troublesome family servant and LuPone is cast as papal adviser Cardinal Antonelli.
