U.K. cinema admissions up 30% in June

First half 2002 up 25%

LONDON — Cinema admissions are continuing to roar ahead in the U.K., with a 30% rise in June compared to the same month last year.

The 12.2 million ticket sales in June brings the tally for the first half of the year to 87.7 million, up 25% over 2001. The increase is largely being driven by Hollywood blockbusters, such as “Spider-Man” and “Star Wars Episode 2: The Attack of the Clones.”

The June rise is all the more impressive, as it coincided with the soccer World Cup, which normally takes a bite out of the box office.
