LONDON — Kevin Macdonald, whose “One Day In September” won the best documentary Oscar in 2000, is about to start shooting “Touching The Void” for FilmFour and the Film Council.
The feature doc is based on the best-selling book by mountain climber Joe Simpson. It recounts his Andes expedition in 1985, which became a life-and-death struggle when he broke his leg on the way down from the Siula Grande peak.
Pic is being produced by John Smithson for Darlow Smithson, with pre-sale financing from Channel 4 in the U.K. and PBS in the U.S.
“Combining elements of documentary and drama, ‘Touching the Void’ will be an innovative, genre-busting film,” said Macdonald. “FilmFour’s decision to get behind the film is a great vote of confidence not only in this project, but in the future of ‘non-fiction cinema’ on the big screen.”
