Tyro helmer Ray gets 'Shattered'

CANNES — Lions Gate Films has completed deals in a number of major territories for “Shattered Glass,” the Hayden Christensen starrer produced by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner’s C/W Prods. and Baumgarten-Merims with Lions Gate.

Pic, the story of the rise and fall of journalist Stephen Glass, who was caught fabricating stories, will mark the directorial debut of screenwriter Billy Ray. Pic is being produced by Craig Baumgarten, Gay Hirsch and Tove Christensen and exec produced by Paula Wagner and Adam Merims.

“Glass” has sold to Metropolitan in France, Medusa Films (Italy), Gaga (Japan), Planeta (Spain), Hoyts (Australia and New Zealand) and Scanbox (Scandinavia); sales have also been wrapped up in more than 15 smaller territories. Pic will be released in North America via Lions Gate.

At Cannes, Lions Gate Films Intl. also completed a raft of sales on its upcoming pic “Confidence.”

Pic wrapped shooting last week in L.A. for helmer James Foley and cast Dustin Hoffman, Andy Garcia, Edward Burns and Rachel Weisz. “Confidence,” penned by Doug Jung, concerns a master con man who inadvertently swindles the accountant of a mob kingpin and sets up an elaborate scam in order to repay the money.

Deals inked were with Momentum for the U.K., Metropolitan for France, Medusa for Italy, Planeta for Spain, Romance for Benelux, Scanbox for Scandinavia, LNK for Portugal, Sun for Latin America, and Hoyts for Australia and New Zealand, in addition to more than a dozen others.
