Fireworks pops for ‘Alibi Club’

Newell may rewrite script, helm

Fireworks Pictures will co-finance through international sales the feature “Alibi Club,” set up with Paramount, with thesp-producer Colleen Camp (“American Rhapsody”) and Ray Wagner to produce.

Mike Newell (“Four Weddings and a Funeral”) is in talks to supervise a rewrite of the script and to direct.

Project reps a move by Fireworks to further expand operations from acquisitions, marketing and distribution into development and financing.

Fireworks acquisition “Empire,” helmed by Franc Reyes, and starring John Leguizamo, Denise Richards, Peter Sarsgaard and Isabella Rossellini, is screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

Company is also developing “Karma Files” along with producers Camp, John Woo and Terence Chang.

Fireworks co-financed and distributed internationally Par’s “Rules of Engagement,” “Rat Race” and “Hardball.”

Shingle, along with distribution and marketing arm IDP — formed in 2000 as a joint venture of Fireworks, Samuel Goldwyn Films and Stratosphere –has been making a name for itself as a formidable specialty distrib, picking up domestic rights to such picks as “Rain,” “The Believer,” “Greenfingers,” “The Man From Elysian Fields” and “Innocence.”

Fireworks Television has produced such shows as “La Femme Nikita,” “Relic Hunter,” “Queen of Swords,” “Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda” and “Mutant X.”

Fireworks Entertainment is a subsidiary of Canadian multimedia conglom CanWest.
