Dimension Films is getting into the Christmas spirit early this year.
Shingle moved swiftly Tuesday to pick up comedy “Bad Santa” in turnaround from Working Title Films for Terry Zwigoff to direct and Joel and Ethan Coen to produce; they will also be exec producers.
John Cameron and Sara Aubrey of KL Line Prods., the production company they run with the Coen brothers, will also produce.
Pic, which is expected to start casting immediately, is pegged for a spring production start and a Christmas release.
Penned by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (“Cats & Dogs”), “Santa” centers around a pair of con men who masquerade as Santa and an elf, traveling to different malls each Christmas to rob them, until they meet an introverted 8-year-old who reminds them of the true meaning of Christmas.
Pic will be Zwigoff’s follow-up to “Ghost World.”
“I found the script to be laugh-out-loud funny, and I also think I can learn a lot by working with the Coen brothers, John Cameron and Sara Aubrey and their production company,” Zwigoff said.
“We love this project and jumped at the chance to be involved with it,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of Dimension Films.
Brad Weston and Andrew Rona, co-prexys of Dimension, will oversee the film’s development and production for the studio.
Weston and senior VP of business affairs Andrew Gumpert negotiated the deal for Dimension with the Coens and Zwigoff’s reps at UTA. Requa and Ficarra are repped by Benderspink.
