Brazilian pic policymakers set to meet

Committee to get under way after legal shakeup

RIO DE JANEIRO — The government’s new Cinema Superior Committee, responsible for film industry policy, will meet for the first time next month.

The 12-member committee is part of last year’s controversial presidential order which created the National Cinema Agency (Ancine) to implement the committee’s policies, and Condecine, new taxes and fees to fund local film production, distribution and exhibition.

The committee includes seven government ministers plus economists Carlos Bresser Pereira and Paulo Roberto Mendonca; Kati Almeida Braga of the Icatu group, which has interests in a local producer/distributor; filmmaker/journalist Arnaldo Jbrazilian abor; and Carlos Eduardo Rodrigues, planning director of TV Globo’s film division Globo Filmes. Rodrigues’ appointment has been slammed by critics who claim media giant Organizacoes Globo muscled him in.
