When I heard the news that Julia Phillips had died, it made me think of the special time when we worked together at Paramount.

I had been at Paramount for a year when Julia was hired in the story department. We were both acutely aware the ’60s were a time with almost no female executives. We were both in our early 20s, idealistic, full of hope, big dreams. Instead of being competitive with each other, we became inseparable and incredibly supportive of one another.

We were thrilled and excited to be making our $300 a week (with no titles) and to be involved with groundbreaking filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola and newcomers like Robert Redford. It was clear then that Julia was destined to break new ground and become a very successful woman in the industry — the first to win the Academy Award for best picture.

Her enthusiasm, her taste, her brilliance and her wit are irreplaceable. I only have the most wonderful memories of that time in the business, and of working with one of the first women to raise the bar for all of us. I choose to remember only the positive things about Julia and will miss her very much.

If only we could turn back the clock and re-create the sense of family, fun and moviemaking that we all shared.
