‘Sonny’ suit downplayed

Golightly unsure of script's origins

DEAUVILLE, France — Nicolas Cage’s Saturn Films partner made light of the court row brewing over exactly who wrote the script of Cage’s helming debut “Sonny” on Tuesday.

“It’s an insurance issue at best,” Norm Golightly told a press conference at the Deauville American Film Festival, via satellite hook-up from Los Angeles. “Sonny” kicked off the ten-title competition for American indies on Monday.

Veteran TV writer Robert Dellinger sued Cage and various production companies for more than $2 million on Friday in federal court in Los Angeles, claiming copyright infringement for material he allegedly penned with the sole-credited screenwriter John Carlen.

“The truth is, we don’t know the origin of the screenplay,” Golightly explained after Cage referred the question to him. “It was brought to Nic’s company, written by a single individual who claimed it to be his own work. We shot the movie and, following that, we were told something different. So it’s become an issue that we don’t know the answer to, but it’s an insurance issue at best and something we don’t have any control over at the moment and again, should not affect the film for going forward at this point.”
