Senator embraces ‘Virgin’

'Liverpool' journey to begin lensing late summer

Senator has come on board to fully finance and produce the broad comedy “The Virgin of Liverpool,” starring Ricky Tomlinson, Paul Barber and comedian Johnny Vegas. Senator Intl. will handle worldwide sales on the pic.

Shooting is expected to start late summer in the U.K.

Pic, being directed by Lee Donaldson from Gil Brailey’s script, will be produced by Mob Film’s Andrew Boswell and Vadim Jean. Senator CEO Hanno Huth and managing director of film production Benjamin Herrmann will exec produce.

“Liverpool” is the story of a 12-year-old girl who resolves to find a new home for a Madonna statue that has been slated for destruction in a Liverpool suburb; ignoring the objections of her dysfunctional family, she meets unexpected consequences and a host of new friends when her quest turns into a zany pilgrimage.

According to Huth, ” ‘The Virgin of Liverpool’ follows in the fine tradition of ‘The Full Monty,’ ‘Billy Elliot’ or ‘East is East.’ The script has charm, terrific humor and wonderful characters, and it’s the kind of story that can work for all ages, in any market.”

Adds Donaldson: “The script and characters are so strong they jumped off the page at me. I am also very excited to be bringing this project to the bigscreen with Senator.”
