Raimi, Senator pair for genre pix slate

Duo to produce number of titles fully financed by Senator Intl.

CANNES — Returning to his “Evil Dead” roots, “Spider-Man” helmer Sam Raimi has teamed with Senator Intl., the overseas sales division of German indie giant Senator Entertainment, and his longterm producing partner Rob Tapert to launch a new genre label aimed at producing modestly budgeted horror, sci-fi and fantasy films.

Under the three-year deal, Raimi and Tapert will produce a number of titles that will be fully financed by Senator Intl., which will retain worldwide distribution rights to the pics.

As yet, Raimi is not expected to helm any of the titles nor appear in them. No specific projects have been announced but Raimi and Tapert will be looking for young directors and existing development projects to bring to the deal.

Nathan Kahane, Senator’s exec VP of motion pictures, will oversee the daily creative operations of the new division.

“With so much talent out there who we would love to work with, it’s very satisfying to be in the business of bringing moviegoing thrills to mainstream audiences. Rob and I are committed to creating a business that continues to find new fans throughout the world,” says Raimi.

Adds Joe Drake, prexy of Senator Intl.: “This is a match made in heaven. Sam Raimi is a master filmmaker that has taken the world by storm with ‘Spider-Man.’ You can’t imagine how especially pleased we are to be working with such a prolific creative partnership as Sam and Rob on this new venture.”
