Miramax Films has acquired the Australian and New Zealand distribution rights to “You Can’t Stop the Murders,” the feature directing debut of comedian Anthony Mir. Pic marks the first acquisition for Miramax’s newly formed office in Australia.
“You Can’t Stop the Murders” concerns a tiny, neglected town where two constables team up with a big-city detective to solve a string of bizarre murders. Mir also co-wrote and starred in the film, which was produced by Anastasia Sideris.
Australia-based senior acquisitions executive Victoria Treole and director of marketing and distribution David Collins run Miramax Australia. The structure handles co-productions and publicity in partnership with Buena Vista Intl. for distribution and marketing.
“This movie highlights our commitment to working with local producers in their home territories throughout the world,” says Miramax chairman of worldwide distribution Rick Sands.
Matt Brodlie, Los Angeles-based senior VP of acquisitions, and Treole brought the project into Miramax.
Stuart Ford, senior VP of acquisitions and international operations, negotiated the deal on behalf of Miramax with attorney Alan Duke. Verge Whitford & Co. negotiated the deal on behalf of producers Big Mo Films.
