New Line Cinema has acquired the high school comedy spec “Hal Buckley” from first-time writers Chris Papierniak & Deena Berezin and Immortal Films.
“Hal Buckley” is the story of a Big Man on Campus who loves abusing his power until he has an existential crisis that throws his high school’s social order out of whack.
Script is a feature-length version of a short film they co-wrote at the American Film Institute; Papierniak directed and Berezin produced.
“It’s a really smart take on the high school comedy,” said Kent Alterman, New Line senior VP production. “It plays with the archetypes and conventions of the social scene.”
Immortal’s Happy Walters, Matthew Weaver, Cary Woods and Andrew Deane will produce “Hal Buckley.” New Line production prexy Toby Emmerich will oversee the project with Alterman and director of development Michele Weiss.
Immortal and New Line are also developing Ice Cube vehicle “Da Unknown Soldier.”
