L.A. Film Fest plans a ‘Lovely’ opening

Eighth IFP outing fetes 'Lovely' helmer's latest

The eighth annual IFP/West Los Angeles Film Festival will bow with an unspooling of Lions Gate’s upcoming comedy “Lovely & Amazing.”

Sophomore effort from “Walking and Talking” writer-helmer Nicole Holofcener is an intimate family portrait of four neurotic but resilient women. The film — which stars Catherine Keener, Brenda Blethyn, Dermot Mulroney, Emily Mortimer, Raven Goodwin, Jake Gyllenhaal and James LeGros — will be released theatrically June 28 in L.A. and Gotham and is slated to expand July12.

” ‘Lovely & Amazing’ is the perfect opening-night film for the Los Angeles Film Festival,” said Rachel Rosen, director of programming for the fest. “The film captures the idiosyncrasies of life in Los Angeles with accuracy and wit.”

Fest officials also have unveiled the names of this year’s three centerpiece preems: UA’s “24 Hour Party People,” from Michael Winterbottom; Sony Classics’ “Ma femme est une actrice” (“My Wife Is an Actress”), by Yvan Attal; and Miramax’s coming-of-age story “Tadpole,” from Gary Winick.

In all, 57 features and docus will unspool between June 20-29. Screenings will be held at Laemmle’s Sunset 5 Theaters, Directors Guild of America, the John Anson Ford Amphitheater and the ArcLight Cinerama Dome. Event is expected to attract more than 30,000 attendees.

As previously announced, festival’s closing-night gala will feature a screening of Fox Searchlight’s Jennifer Aniston starrer “The Good Girl,” directed by Miguel Arteta.
