PARIS — Two out-of-competition screenings of George Lucas’ “Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones” are in the cards at the Cannes Film Fest for May 16, the day the space epic will be released in the United States. Although fest exec Veronique Cayla said Wednesday that there’s still some uncertainty about the showings, the 20th Century Fox release, long rumored for a possible Cannes slot, is now set to bow on fest’s second day.
Brian De Palma’s “Femme Fatale,” which opened commercially in France on April 30, has also nabbed a last-minute special screening.
The thriller, which is set in Cannes during the festival and features a cameo by festival topper Gilles Jacob, will screen at midnight on May 25, the night before the closing ceremonies, in the Grand Theatre Lumiere.
Martin Scorsese will present his 20-minute “Gangs of New York” reel on May 20, accompanied by the film’s stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz. At this special fest event, billed “An Hour With Martin Scorsese,” the director will also pay tribute to the late Billy Wilder.
