Comicbook adaptation aims to sustain record pace

Industryites will be watching this weekend to see how sticky “Spider-Man” has spun his box office web.

Increasingly, drops of 50% or more are common for saturation-level movie releases. But some were suggesting Sony’s comic-book adaptation, which bowed last weekend with a record $114.8 million, could avoid a precipitous soph-sesh drop.

“It’s the kind of picture people want to go back and see a second or third time — especially kids,” suggested a source at a rival studio.

Still, “Spidey” unspooled in a super-wide 3,615 venues, so some say that likely sapped much of the pent-up interest for the high-profile pic from the marketplace.

“It has to drop at least 50%, if only because of the number of theaters it went out on,” observed another industry insider.

Of course, a 50% drop would still mean a whopping $57 million second weekend.

Daily “Spidey” grosses since the weekend have been robust. Pic rang up more than $11 million Monday, almost $10 million Tuesday and $8 million-plus Wednesday for a six-day cume of $144.2 million.

Meanwhile, a couple of bowing pics will be looking to make their own B.O. mark this weekend.

Twentieth Century Fox’s “Unfaithful,” a steamy suspenser starring Diane Lane and Richard Gere, opens in 2,613 theaters today. And Sony/Revolution laffer “The New Guy” unspools in almost 2,700 locations.

Neither is expected to do anything like event-pic B.O., but distribs hope each of the newcomers will find an audience of its own.

“I think we have the kind of movie that will do well as an adult drama,” Fox distrib prexy Bruce Snyder said of prospects for “Unfaithful.” “There’s not much else like that out there right now.”

Other soph pics

Soph-seshers this frame also include MGM’s gang drama “Deuces Wild,” which dealt up $2.7 million, and DreamWorks’ Woody Allen starrer “Hollywood Ending,” which bowed at $2 million. But it’s the second weekend for “Spider-Man” that will draw the most attention this weekend.

Heightening the suspense is industryites’ recollection of summer 2001, when tentpoler after tentpoler followed boffo bows with big B.O. drops in their followup frames. And that’s left movie theater owners among those watching with the keenest interest.

Exhibs get better B.O. splits from distribs the longer movies stay in the marketplace, but last summer several big-grossing movies made so much of their B.O. over opening weekends that pics failed to deliver as well in subsequent frames. That “one-week-wonder” curse has theater owners on the edge of their seats for signs “Spidey” will show unusually brawny legs.
