HOLLYWOOD — “Mad TV” is looking good, according to the 1,700 voting members of the Hollywood Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, who bestowed the comedy-sketch show with three nods Sunday at the guild’s third annual awards ceremony, held at the Beverly Hilton.
“Moulin Rouge” also has the right looks; pic took two nods for period makeup, and hair styling in a feature.
A total of 22 awards were bestowed upon makeup and hair achievers in the arenas of motion pictures, television, commercials and theater.
“Mad TV” beat out the TV competish — which included “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Star Trek Voyager,” “Alias” and “Six Feet Under” — in three of the four categories for which the show was nominated, nabbing nods for character makeup, special makeup effects and character hair styling. NBC laffer “Will & Grace” bested “Mad” in the fourth category, winning for contemporary hair styling.
First-year HBO show “Six Feet Under” fared better in the period and contemporary makeup categories, taking top honors for both. Other winners in the TV sector were “Angel” (period hair styling), sudser “Passions” (innovative hair styling) and “Anne Rice’s Feast of All Saints,” which garnered two awards (period hairstyling and makeup for a mini).
Other film winners included “Legally Blonde” (contemporary hair styling) and “Mulholland Drive” (contemporary makeup).
Dustin Hoffman, who was feted with the guild’s MUHS Barrymore Award — bestowed annually on a Hollywood thesp whose body of work had a profound impact on the artistry of hair and makeup in the industry — accepted his nod, and in turn feted the room full of artists.
“Next to the director, an actor’s most intimate relationship is with you guys,” Hoffman said. “Not one character of mine was mine alone. I show up with a big zero, and together we try a look and reject it, try, reject, try, reject, until we find it together.”
Veteran hair stylist Vivienne Walker and the late veteran makeup artist John Chambers were also honored with George Westmore lifetime achievement awards.
Bruce Vilanch hosted the gala. Celebrity presenters included Alan Ball and the cast of “Six Feet Under,” Anne Archer, Michael Badalucco, Dana Delany, Teri Garr, Ed Harris, David Leisure, Amy Madigan, Edward James Olmos and Henry Thomas.
