DGA documents doc race

Seven tapped for award

HOLLYWOOD — The Directors Guild of America has tapped seven filmmakers for its top documentary award, including last year’s winner, Chuck Braverman, and the helmers of “Startup.com.”

Winner will be announced March 9 at the 54th annual DGA Awards ceremonies at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

Braverman was selected for “Rocky and Roland,” which was released at a Burbank theater. He won last year for “High School Boot Camp” and was nominated in 1974 for “David Hartman, Birth & Babies.”

Chris Hegedus and Jehane Noujaim received their first DGA nomination for “Startup.com,” an Artisan release that grossed $1.3 million domestically.

Other nominees were Steven Ives for “Amato: A Love Affair With Opera,” shown at the Los Angeles Film Festival and televised on PBS; Frances Reid and Deborah Hoffman, “Long Night’s Journey Into Day,” televised on HBO; and Martin Spinelli, “Life on Jupiter,” shown at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival and televised on WNET Thirteen (PBS).

Ives, Reid and Spinelli are first-time nominees, while Hoffman was previously nominated in 1995 for “Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter.”
