Industrial Light & Magic has been tapped to create the f/x for “Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines.”
The San Francisco-based studio, which created the Oscar-winning visuals for “Terminator 2: Judgement Day,” is expected to create more than 300 shots for the new installment, skedded to start principal photography in April. Pic bows summer 2003 and is being distribbed by Warner Bros.
The $170 million pic, financed by Intermedia, is being produced by C-2 partners Mario Kassar and Andy Vajna, along with Joel Michaels and Hal Lieberman. The producers are also in talks with other f/x houses to create visuals for the pic.
Pablo Helman will serve as f/x supervisor on the pic. He’s currently an f/x supervisor on “Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones” and was associate f/x supervisor on Warner Bros.’ “Wild Wild West” and “Space Cowboys.”
Dan Taylor, who recently worked on Universal’s “Jurassic Park III,” will be animation director on the pic.
“Terminator 3” joins several other high-profile projects for which ILM is creating visuals. Its already busy slate includes “Star Wars: Episode II,” “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” “Minority Report,” “Dreamcatcher,” “Men in Black 2” and “The Hulk.”
“Terminator 3,” helmed by Jonathan Mostow (“U-571”), will feature Arnold Schwarzenegger reprising his cyborg role for $30 million.
Warners plans to open “Matrix 2” on Memorial Day 2003, to be followed by “T3” July Fourth weekend and “Matrix 3” in November.
