‘Tank’ house profits rise

Sales for period rose 65%

LONDON — Gullane Entertainment, home of “Thomas the Tank Engine,” has posted a pre-tax interim profit of £6.3 million ($9 million), up 36% for the half-year. Sales for the period, ended in December, rose 65% to $45 million.

The growth came on the back of last year’s $65 million acquisition of “Guinness Book of Records.” Sales for the publication are expected to drop to 3.6 million in 2002 from 3.9 million the previous year.

Gullane said sales for the second half of its financial year should be up and would be driven by “Thomas” and its other kidvid brands.
