HONG KONG — A deal struck between two subsidiaries of Sun Media Group Holdings and a unit of Germany’s Bertelsmann will see each get a leg up on media product distribution in China
Bertelsmann Book Club, set up as a joint venture in Shanghai five years ago, will distribute Sun Media Group’s products through its 1.5 million membership base.
In turn, Sun Media Group will expand Bertelsmann Book Club’s 700-strong product range with content from its Jingwen Record Company, which distributes original audio-visual programming, and Sun Cross Media Development Company, which mainly develops Discovery Channel products for the China market.
“Our cooperation with Sun Media Group is another step forward in Bertelsmann’s localization strategy,” said Ekkehard Rathgeber, president of Direct Group Bertelsmann Asia, of which the book club is a subsidiary.
The deal was announced alongside Sun Media Group’s annual results. The group, having sold a construction business earlier this year, has now morphed into a fully-fledged multi-media business.
It reported its first gross profit, of $12,962,979, since it was set up as Sun Television Cybernetworks two years ago by husband and wife team Bruno Wu and Yang Lan.
