‘X-Files’ to return in fall

"The X-Files" will be back for a ninth season, even though it's still not clear what role exec producer Chris Carter will play.

NEW YORK — “The X-Files” will be back for a ninth season, even though it’s still not clear what role exec producer Chris Carter will play.

Industry sources Wednesday con-firmed that the show would return next fall, as had been expected (Daily Variety, May 16). Carter’s reps at Broder Kurland Webb Uffner and 20th Century Fox TV were still discussing whether Carter would be back as showrunner or as an exec consultant or in some other capacity.

Should Carter not stay on, 20th would likely elevate Frank Spotnitz and Vince Gilligan to showrunners, insiders said.
