MIAMI — Venevision Intl. and Spanish TV production company Nostromo Producciones have formed a joint venture, Nostromo America, to create, market, buy and produce Spanish and Portuguese-lingo formats throughout the Americas.
Nostromo’s founder Giorgio Aresu developed “Sorpresa, Sorpresa” for Spain’s Antena 3, and his company is working with Mexico’s TV Azteca on “Tombola” and “Gente con Chispa.”
Nostromo has over 30 formats that can be developed and marketed to Latin America and the U.S. Hispanic market, a spokesman for Venevision Intl. said.
The joint venture will be based in the Miami offices of Venevision Intl., the TV production and distribution subsid of conglom the Cisneros Group.
Nostromo America is the Cisneros Group’s first foray into format sales, which it sees as a growth area.
Broadcasters in the region have long licensed gameshow formats, and more have recently caught the reality show bug.
The Cisneros Group is the latest Latin American media group to create a dedicated format operation.
Dutch TV giant Endemol Holding and Mexican media company Televisa Group recently inked a deal to set up Endemol Mexico, a 50-50 production joint venture for TV and interactive products (Daily Variety, Oct. 3).
Deal came just a month after Endemol closed a similar joint production pact with leading Brazilian broadcaster TV Globo, creating Endemol Globo.
