MIAMI — Univision Communications and USA Networks announced that the Federal Communications Commission has approved Univision’s acquisition of USA Broadcasting.
In December, Univision said it would purchase USA Broadcasting’s 13 fully owned full-power stations as well as the group’s minority interests in four additional full-power stations for $1.1 billion in cash.
The deal is subject to other closing conditions and is expected to close in the second quarter of 2001, Univision said.
Univision plans to use the stations to launch a second Spanish-language network in January 2002.
It aims to air complementary programming, such as sports, in a bid to draw in Spanish-speaking viewers who do not generally watch Spanish-lingo TV.
The fully owned USA stations are in key markets, such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami, Dallas, Atlanta, Tampa, Houston, Cleveland and Orlando.
