Sports anchor Jose Ramon Fernandez has taken over as head of news at TV Azteca, under fire for political bias.
Fernandez, who has reported from seven Olympic Games, is known for his no-nonsense style and off-air penchant for criticizing superiors. He has no hard news background. He will retain control of Azteca’s sports programming.
His predecessor, Tristan Canales Najjar, becomes director of TV Azteca’s network of local affiliates.
Azteca’s news bulletins have come under fire during Canales Najjar’s 30 months at the helm. A campaign against the left-wing government of Mexico City was regarded as compromising editorial integrity and a freelance lensman was accused of staging a street robbery for the cameras.
