Oz’s $150,000 goof

World Brief

The federal defense minister has ordered an inquiry into how the Royal Australian Air Force became involved in making CBS’ “Survivor: The Australian Outback.”

A dangerous drop-off onto private land performed by RAAF Caribou aircraft in episode one reportedly cost Oz taxpayers A$300,000 ($150,000).

Due to a RAAF “procedural error,” the money will not be reimbursed by the network. A report in today’s Sydney Morning Herald says the maneuver was done without government approval or insurance. The minister called it “a waste of taxpayers’ money” and refused to agree with the RAAF’s take, that it was good PR and training.
